During the initial creation of a character you need to select a class.
Gain the level 0 bonuses of your class.
If you start with multiple classes you gain the starting gear from all of them and the starting gold from only one of them.
Every 5 character levels you gain 1 rank in a chosen class. Some classes (such as gifted) have additional requirements that must be met.
They can choose to increase the rank in a class they already have, or they can take a rank in a different class.
Any new class starts at Rank 0.
If the character takes a rank in a different class they keep the bonuses of any class(es) they already have.
It is highly recommended you limit how many class ranks a character can have at a time based on their current level. Should a character gain more ranks than allowed, the new ranks are 'null' and give no benefit until the next 5th level. Then those class ranks can become active as long as they remain below the new maximum.
Vampirism and Therianthrope do not count towards this total.
The recommendation is 3 ranks per 5 character levels. This allows for creative and diverse character building, blessings, and powerful artifacts without allowing characters to explode in power rapidly. This can be achieved through classist traits rather easily.
2 ranks per 5 levels greatly limits players growth, and is great for new players or more serious campaigns. This limits the effectiveness of classist traits and should be discussed with players.
4 ranks per 5 levels allows players significant freedom, while still somewhat controlling growth.
